Introduction
  • What is a hanging message?
  • a message which is delivered to a recipient at a
    specific place and time
  • envision the message as hanging in a certain
    location, waiting for the recipient
  • Context prevents information overload
  • senders judgment is incorporated
  • an agent can filter more intelligently

Related Work
  • Find-the-nearest commercial services
  • Employee monitoring (Active Badge)
  • Tagging web sites with locations
  • Wearable computing (Memory Glasses)
  • Location based messaging
  • comMotion speech interfaces
  • GeoNotes filtering based on usage

Vision
5
Vision (cntd)
  • Message is only delivered if recipient is at
    location during specified time periods
  • Scenarios of useful applications
  • personal reminders to yourself
  • requests to friends or colleagues
  • distributing promotional information
  • Filtering will ensure no user is bothered by
    unwanted or unsolicited messages

6
Message Categories
  • Every message belongs to a category
  • Senders can select a category when sending a
    message
  • The recipients agent can override the senders
    choice of category

7
Recipient-side Filtering
  • Incoming messages can be filtered by an agent
    using user profiles
  • A message can be filtered into one of three
    types active, passive, ignored
  • Profiles contain rules for dealing with messages
    with certain attributes
  • time period, category, sender, etc.
  • e.g. messages before 10am - ignore

8
Recipient-side Filtering (cntd)
  • Preferences tend to vary by location
  • Separate profiles by location types
  • Home personal info messages - active
  • Work work related messages - active
  • Social urgent personal messages - active
  • In Transit urgent personal urgent work
    messages - active
  • Uninterruptible all messages - passive

9
Message Management
  • What happens to a message once it has been
    delivered to a recipient?
  • it stays on the server until expiration
  • however, by default, each recipient receives each
    message only one time
  • recipient can keep the message alive, so she
will receive it again if she returns
  • a message will not be redelivered if the user
    remains at a location continuously
