Introduction

• What is a hanging message?
• a message which is delivered to a recipient at a
  specific place and time
• envision the message as hanging in a certain
  location, waiting for the recipient
• Context prevents information overload
• senders judgment is incorporated
• an agent can filter more intelligently

Message Categories

• Every message belongs to a category
• Senders can select a category when sending a
  message
• The recipients agent can override the senders
  choice of category

Recipient-side Filtering

• Incoming messages can be filtered by an agent
  using user profiles
• A message can be filtered into one of three
  types active, passive, ignored
• Profiles contain rules for dealing with messages
  with certain attributes
• time period, category, sender, etc.
• e.g. messages before 10am - ignore

Message Management

• What happens to a message once it has been
  delivered to a recipient?
• it stays on the server until expiration
• however, by default, each recipient receives each
  message only one time
• recipient can keep the message alive, so she
  will receive it again if she returns
• a message will not be redelivered if the user
  remains at a location continuously
