Title: Paleontological Evidence (The Fossil Record)

1
Paleontological Evidence(The Fossil Record)
  • A record of all fossils ever discovered which
demonstrates the changes in organisms structure
    over time
  • Transitional forms (missing links) have been
found to show relationships between ancient forms
    and modern ones
  • Fossils can be dated radioactively to determine
    their age accurately

2. Biogeographical Evidence
  • Unrelated species living in different regions of
the world with similar environmental features
    happen to look alike
  • Supports natural selection idea
  • Unrelated anteaters around the world share common
features because of their common selective
    pressures (food, primarily)

Biogeographical Evidence
Convergent Evolution

3. Comparative Anatomy (morphology) a. Vestigial
Structures
  • Structures that remain on an organism which have
no purpose, or are not used for their original
    purpose anymore
  • Examples
  • Human appendix
  • Whale hip bones
  • Penguin/Ostrich wings

7
3. Comparative Anatomy (morphology)b. Homologous
Structures
  • Structures on different species which are similar
in form, but different in function
  • Examples
  • The arm bones of various organisms

8
Homologous Structures
9
4. Embryological Evidence
  • Embryos of a variety of organisms look extremely
similar at early stages of development then
    take on differences later

5. Molecular Biological Evidence
  • Organisms share a great deal of the same DNA
  • The closer an organism is to its ancestor, the
    more DNA is the same
  • Humans/Chimps 98 the same DNA
  • One organisms DNA works in another organism
(same building blocks and inner machinery)
  • Human DNA can substitute for yeast DNA and allow
    the yeast to live normally

12
Other New Evidences
  • Population genetics
  • Biochemistry
  • Genomics
