Homeric Epithets

Homeric Similes

• Noun
• a figure of speech involving the comparison of
  one thing with another thing of a different kind,
  used to make a description more emphatic or vivid
  
• ex. as brave as a lion, sneaky like a fox...
• Homeric simile, also called an epic simile is a
  detailed comparison in the form of a simile that
  is many lines in length. This type of simile is
  still used by authors today.
• (Odysseus and Telemachus cries) The cries of a
  hawk whose young have been stolen from the nest

Irony

• a literary technique, originally used in Greek
  tragedy, by which the full significance of a
  character's words or actions are clear to the
  audience or reader although unknown to the
  character.
• noun dramatic irony?
• Ex. Eumaeus does not realize, although we the
  reader do, that he is speaking to Odysseus about
  Odysseus ???
