Tribes of the Great Plains
  • There were six tribes that were apart of the
Great Plains area. The Lakota, Sioux, Pawnee,
Osage, Cheyenne, and Algonquian were all Tribes
    in the Great Plains.

3
Hunters and Gatherers
  • The Plains tribes were known for living along
rivers. Here the tribes could water for corn,
beans, squash, and pumpkins. Buffalo were killed
for bowls, housing, pots, blankets, and food.

4
Housing
  • The tribes built lodges to live in. Lodges were
large round huts built in a deep hole. These
were made of earth packed over a wooden frame.
While hunting, tepees would be made, a circular
frame consisting of poles coming together at a
point. These poles were used to carry buffalo
    meat.

5
Hunting
  • The Native Americans would dress in an animal
disguise and creep up to buffalo to kill them.
The hunters were on foot and the buffalo were
very fast. Buffalo weigh close to 2,000 pounds
or 1 ton. If they could not creep up on them
they would run a herd over a cliff.

6
New Hunting
  • Horses came to the land by way of the Spanish.
Some horses got free and moved north. After
moving north, the Cheyenne tamed the horses and
used the horses to help kill buffalo. At first a
bow and arrow would be used to hunt, but later a
gun would come to use. Horses were then taken
from other tribes through raids because it showed
a sign of wealth in the tribe.

7
Today
  • Cheyenne live today mainly on a reservation in
Montana. Every Fourth of July a powwow is held.
At a powwow dances and games can be observed by
the Cheyenne people. A powwow is a gathering of
    American Indians.
