  • What is a BIOME?

3
  • A large geographic area that is categorized by
its climate, flora (plants), and fauna (animals).

4
  • A lake is often zoned in the following manner
  • -Littoral Zone
  • -Open Water Zone
  • -Deep Water Zone
  • What are those anyway?

5
  • Littoral Zone It is the area close to the
shoreline. Sunlight can reach the bottom, so
there are many plants and animals living there.
  • The following are zoned by depth
  • Open Water Zone This is the upper surface of a
lake and includes the areas that receive
    sunlight.
  • Deep Water Zone This is below the OWZ and light
cant reach this placethat definitely affects
    what can live thereright?

6
  • You are standing in water up to your knees. There
are many plants but no trees around. Looking
ahead you can see the edge of a pond or lake.
    Where are you?

7
  • In a type of WETLAND called a marsh.

8
  • Explain how succession happens in a lake.

9
  • Over time the lake can fill with sediment.
Plants begin to grow as light can now reach the
bottom. As the plants continue to flourish, more
debris builds up on the bottom. The decay of
this material uses up available oxygen and that
changes what can live there. If enough sediment
builds up...a forest will start to develop.

10
What is the difference between a swamp and a
marsh?
11
There are trees growing in a swamp a marsh is
devoid of trees.
12
Which biome is known for having the greatest
biodiversity?
13
Tropical Rainforests.
14
What types of adaptations would you expect desert
plants to have?
15
-Waxy leaves to keep water from
evaporating.-Spines to help radiate heat and
deter grazers.-Shallow root systems to gather
available water.-Fleshy tissues to hold water
16
Most of the landmass near the Equator is of this
biome_____
17
Tropical ForestRemembernot all tropical
forests are rainforests, and not all rainforests
are tropical!
18
How much precipitation can a tropical rainforest
receive in a year?
19
From 50-260!Your book says 400cm (157.5
inches), butif you do some research, youll see
a lot of other numbers. The important part
isits more rainfall than any other biome!
20
Are all deserts dry and hot?
21
Nope! All deserts are dry lt 10 of
rain/year.Butsome deserts are cold (like the
Gobi and Great Basinand ice creamohwaitthats
dessert).
22
What is the name for the soil in the tundra that
is always frozen?
23
Permafrost
24
Describe the climate of the coniferous forest
(aka taiga or boreal forest).
25
-Not very much rain (avg. 14-29.5 (35-75cm)
year) TemperaturesWinter Avg. -10c
(14f)Summer Avg 14c (57f)Basically Cool
summers and cold winters.
26
What would a taiga look like in the winter?
27
It would be orange with black stripes and it
would be shiveringjust kidding? There would be a
lot of snow and the conifers (pine trees) would
have all of their leaves (needles).
28
What is one of the primary food sources in the
Arctic polar ice ecosystem?
29
Plankton
30
What types of adaptations would you expect the
denizens of the tundra to have?
31
-White Coloration-Camouflage.-Thick fur and/or
fat-insulation.-Fat/Blubber-Long term energy
storage.-Wide feet to act as snowshoes.
32
What is an estuary?
33
An area wherein freshwater combines with
saltwater (brackish). This creates a unique
ecosystem because of the waters low-level
salinity.

34
What are the conditions in the intertidal zone to
which organisms must be adapted?
35
-Being underwater at times and exposed to the air
at others. -Drastic temperature
changes.-Exposure to heavy wave action.-Changes
in salinity.
36
In this ecosystem, many of the organisms are
camouflaged to look like floating plants?Hey!
That really has an Alex Trabek sound to it if you
read it with the proper inflection! Did you know
that he is a big hockey fan? You do now?
37
The Sargasso Sea.
38
What conditions do coral reefs need in order to
thrive?
39
Intense sunlight and warm, clear water.
40
What is the major difference between the zonation
of the pelagic and benthic zones and the zonation
of the group containing the intertidal, neritic,
and oceanic zones?
41
The intertidal, neritic, and oceanic zones are
identified based upon distance from the shore.
The pelagic and benthic zones are depth-based.
42
Name three specific temperate grasslands?
43
Pampas-ArgentinaSteppes-MongoliaPrairies-Western
US
44
Within which biome are we located?
45
Temperate deciduous forest.
46
Why would plants growing on the shaded forest
floor need broader leaves than those growing in
an open meadow?
47
  • Broader leaves present a greater surface area
for collecting energy from the sun. This energy
    is necessary for photosynthesis.

48
Describe the two major grassland biomes.
49
Tropical grasslands-(like the African Savanna)
-Relatively warm-hot all year.-Up to 60 of
rain. -Rainy and dry seasons-Very few trees
that are found in small clusters where the are
presentTemperate grasslands-(such as the US
prairies)-Have harsh winters. -10-30 of
precipitation, some of it is snow. -very few
trees, occasional fires.
50
If two regions share similar abiotic factors,
what would you expect to learn if you observed
the various species of flora and fauna in both
places.
51
There is a high probability that you would
observe many plants and animals with similar
adaptations due to the fact that they have to
survive in similar environments.
