Title: Character Counts!

1
Character Counts!
  • Looking at your list of character traits and
people, circle the three individuals that you
feel you could write the most about.
  • These could be the three people you know the best
or the three people that first popped in to your
mind when you completed the assignment

2
  • In your writing notebook, write down the names of
the three people you are considering and the
character trait you associate with them
  • Underneath each name, write down at least two
specific examples of how that person demonstrates
    the trait
  • If you cannot think of at least two, do not
choose this person to write about!

3
  • Now that you have narrowed it down to three
people, turn to a partner and tell him/her
briefly about your choices. Also, ask which
person they feel you have the most information
    about!

4
  • You now need to narrow you topic down to one
person and one character trait. Remember, you
will be focusing on this individual for you whole
    essay, so choose wisely!!!
  • On a new sheet of paper, put the individuals
name and character trait at the top.

5
Prewrite
  • Create a prewrite using either an outline,
    columns, or bubble cluster
  • The center topic should be your individuals name
    and the character trait.
  • The 2 subtopics should be the two distinctive
ways this individual shows the character
trait--it works best if these subtopics are
    general categories!
  • The 2-3 concrete details per subtopic--these
    should be specific events!

6
Thesis statement
  • You have two options with your thesis statement
    general or specific
  • Ex Greg is the most unorganized person known!
  • Ex Greg is not organized because his room is a
pigsty, his backpack is a mess, and he just
barely gets to the bus stop on time.
