1
SDCG-6 Session 7JAXA contributions to RD
Support strategy (Element 3)
  • Masanobu Shimada
  • JAXA EORC

2
Element 3 support
  • Background (for your info only this slide to be
    removed from your presentation)
  • With the support of CEOS, GFOI will coordinate
the RD component and integrate user requests for
EO data into a single coordinated observation
plan (i.e., Element 3) that simultaneously aims
to address several priority RD topics identified
    by GFOI.
  • The Element 3 strategy outlines different means
for CEOS space agencies to support the GFOI RD
    component
  • Provision of satellite data over GFOI RD study
    sites (see last slide)
  • New data acquisitions
  • Historical (archive) data
  • Coordinated research announcements (RA) and
    solicitations
  • RAs targeted at selected GFOI priority RD topics
  • Coordinated open calls targeted at GFOI support
  • Funding opportunities (if any)

Agency name
  • Acquisitions over GFOI RD Study Sites
  • Please clarify your agency's interest/capacity to
undertake (new) satellite data acquisitions over
GFOI RD Study Sites (see last slide) during
    2014-2015.
  • In accordance with Element-3 acquisition plan (to
    be discussed at SDCG-6),
  • and/or
  • as part of on-going acquisition plan for your
    mission

4
  • Acquisitions over GFOI RD Study Sites
  • JAXA has implemented a Basic Observation Scenario
    ("BOS") for ALOS-2 which comprises
  • 10m Dual-pol stripmap mode At least 2
observations/year in over all global forest
regions, with up to 6 obs/year over all tropical
    forests
  • 100m Dual-pol ScanSAR mode 9 obs/year (every 42
    days) over all tropical forests
  • New acquisition requests for GFOI can not be
accommodated, but it is anticipated that the BOS
which is fully compliant with SDCG
recommendations for L-band SAR (at least dual
    season, resolution lt30m, dual-pol) satisfies
    the GFOI RD requirements.

Agency name
  • Archive data over GFOI RD Study Sites
  • Clarify your agency's interest/capacity to
undertake archive search of historical data over
the GFOI Study Sites from current and/or relevant
    historical missions
  • Output list of scenes for Mission X over study
    sites
  • Provide URL to archive www

6
  • Archive data over GFOI RD Study Sites
  • JAXA historical archives of L-band SAR data from
    JERS-1, ALOS and ALOS-2 constitute long-term and
consistent time-series data over the global
forest cover (with emphasis on tropical and
boreal) from mid 1990's to present (1992-1998,
    2006-2011,2014)
  • On request, JAXA can undertake archive search of
historical data over the GFOI Study Sites from
JERS-1, ALOS and ALOS-2. The JAXA archive can be
    searched online at
  • ltLink to AUIG-2 web sitegt

7
  • Archive data over GFOI RD Study Sites and mosaic
    data
  • JAXA historical archives of L-band SAR data from

forest cover (with emphasis on tropical and
boreal) from mid 1990's to present (1992-1998,
    2006-2011,2014)
  • On request, JAXA can undertake archive search of
historical data over the GFOI Study Sites from
JERS-1, ALOS and ALOS-2. The JAXA archive can be
searched online at ltLink to AUIG-2 web sitegt
  • In additionglobal ortho-slope corrected PALSAR
    mosaics (2007-2010) and Forest/Non-Forest maps
are available by JAXA. Free download at
  • http//www.eorc.jaxa.jp/ALOS/en/palsar_fnf/fnf_ind
    ex.htm
  • Since Jan 16, 2014 50 m pixel spacing
  • From end of October 2015 25 m pixel spacing.
    Will also include ALOS-2 (2014)

Agency name
  • Data provision for RD
  • Clarify your agency's interest/capacity to
process and provide satellite data to GFOI
    research groups (at no cost)
  • Conditions for data provision (e.g. scene
    limitations, data sharing, acquisition modes,
    etc.)
  • Data request procedures
  • Data access procedures
  • Data processing levels

  • Data provision for GFOI RD
  • Conditions for data provision
  • Within the framework of the GEO Forest Carbon
Tracking (GEO-FCT) Task 2009-2013 JAXA provided
ALOS standard product data free of charge to
    GEO-FCT research groups (lt50 scenes/year/group)
in the 11 National Demonstrator countries.
  • In support of GFOI RD activities, JAXA
    anticipates
  • ALOS 50? (TBC)
  • ALOS-2 50? (TBC)
  • (Can limited amounts of ALOS and ALOS-2 data be
provided free of charge also for GFOI RD? Yes!)

  • Data access procedures for GFOI TBD probably
the same way to the ALOS case will be
taken.(Ishida-san will handle this data provision
