Title: Potential Hydrogen (pH)

1
Potential Hydrogen (pH)
  • Created by Dr. A. Dávila

2
What is pH?
  • pH is nothing more than a chemist's shorthand for
describing the amount of hydrogen in products
The capital letter "H" is the chemical symbol for
hydrogen and pH is a figure describing the
concentration of hydrogen in the product, which
in turn determines the acidity of the product.

3
pH and Plants
  • Soil pH is very important because it influences
several soil properties that directly affect
growth of plants. Soil pH effects soil bacteria
    and nutrient leaching and availability.

4
Products on the pH scale
Notice that water is NEUTRAL
5
Lemon juice is ACIDIC
6
Vinegar is less ACIDIC than the lemon juice
7
Cola is less ACIDIC than the vinegar
8
Milk is a base
9
Shampoo is a stronger BASE than the milk
10
The dish soap is a stronger BASE than the shampoo
11
The bleach is a stronger BASE than the dish soap
12
What do most plants like?
13
Roses like soil a bit more acidic than most
flowers
14
What about your taste buds?
15
Now do know why your vomit stinks?
