Title: WATER IN MIDDLE AGED TRNAVA (Slovakia)
1WATER IN MIDDLE AGED TRNAVA(Slovakia)
- Sine aqua deest vita There is no life without
water
2 Trnávka influenced economy
- When people find the right place to settle down,
they need favourable climatic conditions for life
and sources of food and water. Our town Trnava
was created at the end of the 9th century like
a small settlement. The population had settled
down in shallow valley of the stream called
Trnávka. In the close surroundings there were
created important business ways, which crossed
near Trnávka. The merchants exchanged their
goods here- they did bartering .
3Two Settlements
- Here was a local market at the crossroads of
those business ways. Later, they started to get
used to more settlements around Trnávka. There
were many small settlements, but we will mention
only the two biggest. There was a new
market-settlement named Sobota on the left side
of Trnávka. On the right side of Trnávka, the
population was situated near the Church of St.
Jacob. There was also the Benedictine Abbey here
and this settlement was named Trnava. The
citizens drew water for themselves from Trnávka
and surrounding small wells, which citizens have
dug few decades later.

4Exploitation of Water
- In the Middle Ages, they used water for cooking,
washing themselves, for drinking, they used water
when they was cleaning something and water was
used also in crafts and productions like mills,
manufacture of linen, tannery, dyeing and
industry.
5- The water was used in the bakery, but also in
smithy (for cooling of metal)-the same task water
was also in glassworks , in furriers to use
water in the processing of leather. - Agriculture has played a strategic role in
irrigation and ends as a liquid for cattle. - People still used to use water for washing.
6- The water is used in the construction industry
for making mortar - Water is quenching! The fire-car sucked in water
from the pond and then the car let it out on
burning palace. This is a very strategic role of
water. - Water is also used for defense. Hot water ran
over the walls on enemies.
7The Breweries
Water was necessary in institutions like
breweries too. The history of beer in Trnava
dates back to the 14th century. In 1419 the town
was given the privilege of brew and sale of
beer, thus legalizing the status of the 14
century. In 1752 Trnava received the permission
to build a new brewery. It was built outside the
walls of the city council and gentlemen. It
operated from 1783 until the end of the first
half of the 19th century.
8Production of Beer
Water is important in the production of beer from
raw materials. It is used for actual production
of beverages, as well as in the processes which
are related to the production, which implies that
for the production of beer, it needs large
volumes of water - 1 liter of beer issued
requires four times up to eight times more water.
Its application directly affects the final
product quality. Breweries are to be built in
places where there is a significant source of
potable water.

9Fishing Association
- We had a fishing association in Trnava. In the
Chronic of City Trnava, we found testimony that
there was a pond in the beginning of 18th century
in Trnava. But because of plague epidemic in
1708 the pond was cancelled. There were planted
trees on its bottom. Nowadays, there is a sport
areal Slávia Trnava and a sport hall on this
place. Trnavians call this place Na rybníku
what in English means On the pond.

10The Second Pond
- This pond was not the only one in surroundings.
The Chronic of City Trnava says, that in 1684
convicted witches had a judgment They will
be submitted test by water. On these purposes
was used a town Pond, lying among Biely Kostol
(White Church) and Ružindol.
11Stone Mill
- Later, there were built big areas of ponds
Kamenný mlyn (Stone mill) near this town.
12Queen Constancia
- The chronicle attributable a building of Trnava
to queen Constancia. Her activity accelerated
a construction fortification and increase of
settlements.
13Building of Trnava
- In the first phase, which proceeded in the
beginning of 13th century 15 meter long towers
arose. They were connected by with wooden-soil
construction walls and surrounded by partly
ditch which was supplied from Trnávka. In the
Middle Ages, walls and ditches protected
sovereigns.
14Conclusion
- On the basis of these information, we can say, in
past, water was very important for people and
they could not live without it. Water is in
past, present and future very necessery for
people.
