Title: Circulatory System

1
Circulatory System
  • Chapter 46 Page 932

2
What is the structure and function of the
circulatory system?
  • Discovery Health Video Heart Attacks
  • Structure (parts of the system)
  • Function (many job this system does)

Heart page 933
  • Cardiovascular system blood, heart, blood
    vessels
  • Lymphatic System lymph nodes, lymph, and lymph
    vessels
  • Cardiovascular and lymphatic systems make up the
    CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
  • FUNCTIONS transport nutrients, hormones, gases,
gets rid of waste, and maintains body temperature

4
Central Organs of CS
  • Most important organ of the CS is the heart
  • Relatively the size of the human fist
  • Divided into atriums and ventricle
  • The atriums are the top parts
  • The valves are the bottom parts (ventricles)

5
Circulation of Blood in the Heart
  • 1. Deoxygenated (lacking oxygen) blood enters the
    right atrium.
  • 2. The right atrium sends the O2 lacking blood
    into the right ventricle.
  • 3. The muscles of right ventricle contract and
force the blood into the pulmonary arteries.
  • 4. The PA sends the blood to the lungs
  • 5. The oxygenated blood returns to the left
    atrium of the heart
  • 6. The oxygenated blood is then pumped into the
left ventricle (forces the blood to the aorta)
  • 7. This is when blood is transported to all parts
    of the body
  • 8. The aorta and the left ventricle work together
to by the final checkpoint before it is released
    from the heart

6
Lymphatic System page 939
  • Major areas where lymph nodes tonsils, thymus,
    spleen, and bone marrow.
  • Disease-fighting cells of the immune system are
    also located here
  • Lymph excess fluid that comes from the tiny
    vessels of the lymphatic system
  • Blood vessels form a complete circuit or rotation
  • LS is a direct path that starts the lymph
    rotation
  • Lymphocytes white blood cells that are
    specialized to fight disease
  • Infection? Nodes may become inflamed or swollen

7
Circulatory Review Questions
  1. Describe the structure of the heart.
  2. Outline the path that blood follows
  3. What things cause a heartbeat to slow down, speed
    up, or stay constant?
  4. What is the difference between oxygenated blood
    and deoxygenated blood?
  5. What 2 systems make up the circulatory system?
