What is a Citizen?

• A citizen is a person w/ rights and duties under
  a government. (town, state, nation)
• Right to express opinions
• Right to protection under the law
• Duty to obey the law pay taxes
• Citizenship is permanent unless
• You give it up
• Become citizen of another country
• Convicted of trying to overthrow US government

Who is a Citizen?

• Anyone born in US or its territories
• Even if parents are not citizens
• At least one parent is a US citizen
• You have been naturalized
• Legal process of becoming a citizen
• You were less than 18 yrs old when parents
  naturalized

Naturalization

• Alien citizen of one country living in another
• Have many rights duties but cant vote or hold
  government office
• Application-Examination-Final Hearing

• All rights duties of regular citizens except
• Right to be President or Vice President

• The people decide what the government will do and
  not do
• Citizens elect representatives
• People who are chosen to speak and act for their
  fellow citizens in government.
• Congress, President, city council, mayor,
  governor, and some judges
• The people control how long the reps keep their
  job
