- Is one of the 256 registrated NGOs having a
consultative status with ECOSOC (in charge of
eco and social problems.) - ECOSOC is one of the 5 main organisations of the
UN in Geneva - Together they establish prescriptions to be
worked on by the Committee of Human Rights - It has a close relationship with NGOs which can
influence its decisions . - IIW is a member of the NGO Committee on the
status of women Geneva (NGO CSW Geneva)
4HUMAN RIGHTS at international level
- 1948 Adoption of Universal Declaration by UN
Assembly. - It ensures 30 fundamental rights. Many states
have included some of these in their
Constitutions. - This Declaration was reinforced by 2 treaties
- On economic,social and cultural rights.
- On civil and political rights
5The Human Rights Council
- Is an inter governemental body, made up of 47
states, elected by a UN Assembly in NYC - It is responsible for the promotion and
protection of HR - 3 annual sessions, amounting to 10 weeks
- Headquarters in Geneva
- It presents an annual report to the General
Assembly
6Thematic priorities of HRC
- Enhancing equality
- Fighting against discrimination
- Strengthening accountability and the rules of law
- Integrating HR in the economic sphere
- Widening democratic space
- Information on and protection of HR in situations
of conflict, violence and insecurity.
7Human Rights procedures
- Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a process
which involves a review of HR reports of all UN
member states - The Advisory Committee serves as the Councils
think tank .18 Experts provide it with
expertises and advice on thematic HR issues. - Complaint procedures NGOs or individuals can
bring violation to the attention of the Council. - The Council also works with experts,
representative work groups that examine and
publish reports on thematic issues.2 examples

8 Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination
Against Women
- - Is one of the work groups of 23 independent
experts . - - When a Country ratifies the Convention on
elimination of all forms of discrimination
against women, it must submit regular reports on
how these rights are implemented . - - The CDAW adresses its concerns and its
recommendations. NGOs can submit claims of
violations of rights .
9NGO CSW Geneva
Inner Wheel is a member of this NGO . The NGO
CSW brings together all representatives to share
information, coordinates participation at UN
meetings , and works on substantive projects,
such as statements, organization of panel events
an other advocacy activities concerning Womens
Rights
10My mandate as IIW representative
- I participated in the annual sessions,
- at side events FGM (female genital mutilation),
migrant women, education, gender equality,
harmful traditional practices in rural regions,
but also in urban aereas early forced marriage,
elderly abuse
11- Last November, during this forum, 750
participants reviewed achievements and challenges
in implementation on the Beijing Declaration and
Platform for action. - After 3 days of roundtables, discussions, we
urged governements to act recommendations.
12Recommandations focused on promotingGender
equalitybased on
- labor market for women.
- Policies and decision making for women.
- Prevention and elimination of violence against
women and girls. - Women and girls access to justice.
- Placing womens rights in the center of
sustainable development.
13These recommendations have contributed to The
Global Review of implementation in Beijing
Platform for action at the 59th session of The
Commission on the Status of Women CSW59 in NYC
last March. .
14My mandate is to disseminate how much has been
done in implementation of Gender equality And
how much progress has to be made to end all
practices that violate the Human Rights of women
and girls around the world .
