What is Body Composition?
  • The percentage body fat to lean body tissue.
    Including water, bone, and muscle.
  • Physical activity and nutrition affect body
    composition.

Lean Body Weight
  • The combined weight of bone, muscle, and
    connective tissue.

Essential Fat
  • Minimum amount of body fat necessary for good
    health.
  • Insulates body
  • Cushions your internal organs
  • Provides a source of stored energy

Being Overweight
  • The condition in which a person is heavier than
    the standard weight range for his or her height.

Obesity
  • Obesity is an excess proportion of total body
    fat. A person is considered obese when his or her
    weight is 20 or more above normal weight.
  • A person is considered obese if his or her BMI is
    over 30.
  • "Morbid obesity" means that a person is either
    50-100 over normal weight, more than 100 pounds
    over normal weight, has a BMI of 40 or higher

What Causes Obesity?
  • poor eating habits
  • overeating or binging
  • lack of exercise (i.e., couch potato kids)
  • family history of obesity
  • medical illnesses (endocrine, neurological
    problems)
  • medications (steroids, some psychiatric
    medications)
  • stressful life events or changes (separations,
    divorce, moves, deaths, abuse)
  • family and peer problems
  • low self-esteem
  • depression or other emotional problems

Facts
  • Between 16 and 33 percent of children and
    adolescents are obese.
  • 15.5 percent of teens are obese.
  • 45.9 percent of teens are at risk for developing
    health problems due to weight.
  • Fast food 80 percent of teens underestimated the
    calories in their fast-food meals they guessed
    800 calories when the calorie count was really
    almost double that 1,500.
  • Screen time One third of teens spend close to 40
    hours on TV and the computer every week and about
    7 percent spend more than 50
