Krakatau erupted in 1883, and produced what may
have been the loudest noise ever heard by man.

pictures of the 1902 eruption. Seen on the right

Some of the damage caused by the 1902 eruption of
Pelee. This is the town of St. Pierre, or what
is left of it. 30,000 people were killed, only 2
people survived.

Paracutin, a cinder cone volcano in Mexico.
First erupted in 1943 in a farmers field. Within
months the area looked like this, and buried a
nearby village.

Mt. St. Helens eruption of 1980. The blast
leveled forest 27 kilometers away. So much ash
was in the air it turned day into night.

throwing 27 million metric tons of gas and ash
into the air. Has been called the largest
volcanic eruption last century.
