The Bill of Rights
www.damchicago.com/ bill-of-rights-01.html
  • The Bill of Rights protects the natural rights of
    United States citizens.
  • A natural right is a right that all people should
have and that no government should infringe upon.
These civil rights allow US citizens to their,
life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

2
The First Amendment
  • The first amendment guarantees United States
    citizens the following freedoms
  • Religion
  • Speech
  • Press
  • Assembly
  • Petition

3
Freedom of Religion
  • The First amendment states that citizens are free
to practice any religion that they choose.
  • The United States government separates church and
state, therefore we may worship in various ways
    and places.

4
Freedom of Speech
  • This portion of the first amendment gives
citizens the right to say most anything that they
    want as long as
  • It is not illegal (Like shouting fire in a public
    place) and
  • It is not SLANDER, which is an intentional lie
    created about someone or something.

Freedom of the Press

  • This part of the first amendment allows the
public to be informed via various types of media
    such as
  • Television
  • Newspapers
  • Radio

6
Freedom of Assembly Petition
  • United States citizens are able to meet in groups
to discuss anything concerning the government.
  • Citizens are also able to petition, which means
that they can request something of the
    government.

7
So, what if...?
  • We did not have a Bill of Rights?
  • There was no media?
  • We could not worship freely?

8
Did you know...?
  • The states needed to ratify (approve) the
Constitution in order for it to become our
    nations highest law?
  • But, the Constitution was not ratified during the
    first Constitutional Convention
because it was lacking a Bill
    of Rights.
