Introduction

• Bluetooth is a wireless technology for short
  range
• data and/ or voice communication
• The communication range is 10 meters, with a 100
• meter version planned
• The bandwidth is 1MBit/ s, with a maximum user
  data speed of 723 KBit/ s
• Can be operated in point- to- point or networked
  mode

Characteristics

• Bluetooth operates in the free 2.4GHz ISM
  (Industrial,Scientific, Medical) microwave band
• The radio frequency is changed 1600 times/ second
  (frequency hopping) over 79 channels
• The frequency hopping algorithm is random,
  based on the master address and the current time
• All 79 channels (which are 1MHz apart) are
  visited before a channel is re- used

• a) Point- to- point 2 Bluetooth devices
  communicate directly
• b) Pico- net 8 Bluetooth devices can communicate
  in a small network
• c) Scatternet Piconets can be connected to form
  larger networks

Piconets

• A Piconet has one master (M) and maximum 7
  active slaves (S)
• A Piconet can have up to 255 inactive parked (P)
  slaves that belong to the network but are idle
• All slaves in the network follow the frequency
  hopping algorithm defined by the master

Scatternets

• Piconets can be connected to form a larger
  network (a scatter- net)
• Scatter- nets can be connected by having
• Several masters connected to the same
  slave
• A master being slave in another network
