4Introduction to Population
5Population Growth
- It took until the year 1850 for the world to
reach one billion people.
6How much is one billion?
- The population of Houston is 2.1 million.
- If you had a million dollars in thousand dollar
bills, it would be 4.3 inches tall. - If you had a billion dollars in thousand dollar
bills, it would be 358 feet tall! (35 stories
tall)
7How much is one billion?
- It took you 11.6 days to be alive for a million
seconds. - It will take you 31.7 years to live for a billion
seconds.
8How much is one billion?
- In a supersonic airplane, you could travel one
million miles in 31 days. - It would take 85 years to travel one billion
miles in that same airplane.
9Population Growth
- In 2011, the population of the world reached 7
billion!
10China and India
- China and India are both over 1 billion people.
- China 1.3 billion
- India 1.2 billion
- India is growing faster than China. They should
catch up by 2050.

12Population
13Population Density
- People live on only 10 of the Earths surface.
- Why?
14Most live in East or South Asia, Europe, and the
Northeastern USA.
15Why do people live in particular areas?
- Moderate climates
- People prefer to live in places not too hot or
not too cold.
16Why do people live in particular areas?
17Why do people live in particular areas?
- Proximity
- People stay close to where they came from
18Why do people live in particular areas?
- The Industrial Revolution (18th and 19th c.)
- Caused a population shift as people moved from
rural to urban areas.
19Urbanization
- The dramatic rise in the number of cities and the
changes in lifestyle that result. - There are now more people in cities than in rural
areas.
20Demographic Statistics
- Population density
- The number of people living in a given area.
- U.S. 83 per sq. mi.
- Bangladesh 2,559 per sq. mi.
21Demographic Statistics
- Fertility rate
- the average number of children a woman will have
in her lifetime. - Niger 7.68
- U.S. 2.06
22Demographic Statistics
- Rate of Natural Increase (RNI)
- Birth rate - Death rate
- Number of births
- or deaths per
- 1000 people in
- a year.
23Stage 1 Slow Growth
- Population grew very slowly.
- Many children born, but also many die.
- Most people are farmers.
- Growth pattern until the 1700s.
24Stage 2 Rapid Growth LDC
- Hygiene and medical technology increases.
- Lots of babies being born and less are dying.
- Population increases dramatically in wealthy
countries. - Now reaching poor countries.
25Stage 3 Slow Growth or No Growth MDC
- Population begins to level off.
- People have less kids as they become wealthier.
- Kids are no longer an asset.
- Immigration is often the only reason they see any
growth.
The U.S. is in Stage 3
26Stage 4 Negative Growth MDC
- More people are dying than are being born.
- Sometimes incentives given for more children.
Abortion sometimes illegal.
Japan and most of Europe are in Stage 4
27Overpopulation
- Carrying capacity
- the number of people a region can support
- with minimal
- negative effects
- reached when
- resources available
- can no longer
- support the population.
28Carrying Capacity
- Which has a larger carrying capacity?
29Consumption of the Worlds Resources
30How do we avoid exceeding our carrying capacity?
31Technology!
