Objects of Verbs- Basic Definition

• ACTION VERBS only have objects
• Direct object receives the action of the verb.
• Answers question what or whom?
• Indirect object tells to what, to whom, for what
  or for whom an action is done.
• Usually is placed between the verb and the direct
  object.

How do I find an object?

• Direct object
• Find the subject and the verb and askwho/what?
• Indirect object
• Find the subject, verb, and DO and askTo whom or
  for whom?
• Ex The rescue team gives the surviors hot food.

Steps to Finding an Object

• 1. Cross off prepositional phrases
• 2. Underline the simple predicate twice
• Label the predicate AV (action) or LV (linking)
• If its action- ask _(verb)__ who or what? This
  is your direct object
• If its action- ask __(verb)__ to or for whom?
  This is your indirect object.
