The verb gustar literally means to be pleasing
to. We use gustar to express our likes and
dislikes.

• When we use gustar we are saying that something
  is or is not pleasing to a person.
• It is the same as saying I like, you like,or
  I dont like, You dont like, et cetera in
  English.

Me gusta la manzana.

• The apple is pleasing to me.

No me gusta la manzana con gusano.

• The apple with the worm is not pleasing to me.

Me gustan las manzanas.

• The apples are pleasing to me.

No me gustan las manzanas con gusanos.

Gustar is only used in the 3rd person singular
and plural.gusta gustan

• If only one thing is pleasing to a person or
  persons, the 3rd person singular form of the
  verb is used.
• If more than one thing is pleasing to a person or
  persons the 3rd person plural form of the verb is
  used.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!

• It is the number of things liked or disliked that
  determines if one uses the singular, (gusta) or
  plural (gustan), NOT how many people like or
  dislike it/them.

Gustar takes the indirect object pronoun.

• The pronoun indicates to whom the thing is
  pleasing.
• Me gusta el helado. (yo)
• Te gusta la torta. (tú)
• Le gusta el flan. (él, ella Ud.)
• Nos gusta la fruta. (nosotros)
• Os gusta el dulce. (vosotros)
• Les gusta el pastel. (ellos, ellas, Uds.)

Use the plural when more than one thing is
pleasing to a person!

• Me gustan el helado y la fruta.
• Te gustan la torta y el flan.
• Le gustan el flan y el pastel.
• Nos gustan las frutas.
• Os gustan los dulces.
• Les gustan los pasteles.

To say that something is NOT pleasing to a
person, put no before the pronoun.

• No me gusta el helado.
• No te gusta la torta.
• No le gusta el flan.
• No nos gusta la fruta.
• No os gusta el dulce.
• No les gusta el pastel.

The same is true in the plural, put no before
the pronoun.

• No me gustan el helado ni la fruta.
• No te gustan la torta ni el flan.
• No le gustan el flan ni el pastel.
• No nos gustan las frutas.
• No os gustan los dulces.
• No les gustan los pasteles.

To say that one likes to do something, use gustar
infinitive.

• Me gusta cocinar.
• No me gusta lavar los platos.
• Me gusta escuchar música.
• No me gusta hacer la cama.
• Me gusta leer revistas.
• No me gusta leer libros aburridos.
