  • ACRYLIC PAINTING

Characteristics of Acrylic Paints
  • Water-based (Mimic oil paints without mess
    toxicity.)
  • Dries quickly. Sometimes good, sometimes not.
  • Very versatile thick or thin application.
    Texture consistency can be modified.
  • Lends itself to MIXED MEDIA.
  • Final finish of the piece can be altered with
    varnish and thus the finished painting does not
    need to be framed behind glass.

  • Artists Quality (Professional) often more
    expensive high concentration of pigment
    therefore, more vibrant smoother consistency.

3. PERMANENCE
  • Often called Lightfastness, refers to the ability
    of the pigment in the paint to resist gradual
    fading when exposed to light.

Pigments that fade over time are often called
fugitive colors. At the right are lightfastness
standards you would typically see on paints.

4. VISCOSITY
  • Refers to the consistency or thickness of the
    paint.

Body acrylics thick consistency better for
mixing blending. Fluid acrylics thinner and
better for detail work, staining, watercolor and
dry-brush work.

Tubes small and portable. Paste-like. Jars
Save money buying more paint at once.
Thicker. (Fluid acrylics come in bottles. )

Use a retarding medium or open acrylics (that
