Washingtons Role in the War
  • He was 22 when he entered the war.
  • Washingtons Early Life
  • Land surveyor since he was 15. His assignment in
    the war was to build a fort where the rivers meet
    to form the Ohio river.
  • He led 150 men to build the Fort in the Ohio
    River Valley, but heard the French had just
    completed Fort Duquesne, at the very spot where
    Washington hoped to build his fort.
  • Washington launched a surprise attack and
    scattered the French and he built Fort
    Necessity, however the French came back with 700
    men and forced the Virginians to surrender.
    Washington was sent back home

  • In 1755 Gen. Braddock(commander in chief of
    British army) led British and colonial troops
    back to Fort Duquesne. Braddock had little
    experience in fighting, and although he was
    warned by Washington and Indian allies not to go
    forward, he did anyway.
  • half of the British army are killed at Fort
    Duquesne (now Pittsburgh, PA).
  • This was a major defeat for the British.

  • Early in the war, a small force of Native
    Americans and French routed an army led by Edward
    Braddock. George Washington later wrote of the
    defeat
  • The Virginia troops showed a good deal of
    bravery, and were near all killed. For I believe
    out of three companies that were there, there are
    scarce 30 men left aliveThe general (Braddock)
    was wounded of which he died three days after.
    Sir Peter Halket was killed in the field, where
    died many other brave officers. I luckily escaped
    without a wound, though I had four bullets
    through my coat and two horses shot under me.

  • In 1759, Gen. James Wolfe captures the New
    France capital, Quebec with a surprise attack up
    steep cliffs along the St. Lawrence River.

    not before being told the the British had won.
  • Quebec was surrendered on September 18, 1759.

  • Albany Congress met in 1754 to discuss a
    stronger alliance with the Iroquois and a united
    colonial defense.
  • Ben Franklin (Penn. Delegate) proposes Albany
    Plan of Union to create one general government
    for 13 colonies to make laws, raise taxes and set
    up defense for the colonies.
