Indochina European Influence
  • A very long history of conflict, well before
    Europeans exerted their control over the area
  • Khmer Empire (Cambodia)
  • Laotian Empire (Laos)
  • China controlled most of what became Vietnam
  • The edicts of the emperor stop at the edge of
    the village.
  • Local rule was the order of the land for
    centuries prior to the arrival of the French
  • Most were literate and educated, women had many
    modern rights, and most were Buddhist.

Indochina European Influence
  • The French were very proud of their
    civilization, and saw it as a duty to spread it
    to other peoples that were, perhaps inferior
  • People were taught French
  • Missionaries converted people to Catholicism
  • Resistance was met with force
  • Favor was given to those that cooperated and
    embraced the French civilization.
  • Laws mirrored Napoleonic Code
  • Education was limited
  • No real national identity

Ho Chi Minh Bringer of Light
  • Born in a small village in Vietnam
  • Worked on French steam ship as a cook
  • By end of WWI, living in France organizing
    immigrants to petition the Versailles Peace
    Conference for France to get out of Indochina.
  • Inspired by Lenin, joins French Communist party,
    travels to Moscow, recruits, and continues his
    travels around the world.
  • With defeat of the French in 1940 (WWII), he
    returns to Vietnam to push for independence.
  • Becomes president of Democratic State of Vietnam
    (North Vietnam) in 1945
  • Following WWII, pushing for Chinese and French
    withdrawalFrench cruiser fires upon city
    following a confrontation between Vietnamese and
    French soldiers
  • First Indochina War 1946-1954
