Who is your childs teacher?
  • Mrs. Lane- Masters degree in E.C.E from KSU,
    certified K-12 Health and Physical Ed.
  • 13 years teaching, Mountain View and Murdock
  • Grew up in East Cobb- Mt. Bethel, Dickerson and
    Walton
  • I have 2 daughters- Braley and Brooklyn
  • Husband, Jim who works for City of Roswell and
    coaches a travel team out of East Cobb baseball

What are my overall goals for your children?
  • To provide your child with a supportive and
    challenging learning environment which fosters
    independence
  • Differentiate the curriculum to individual needs
  • To give your child the academic tools they need
    to succeed in the future
  • To make new friends and discover new interests

Language Arts Curriculumsee importance of

  • Reading Workshop consists of Mini-lessons,
    individual conferencing, and strategy groups-
    TEACHERS COLLEGE
  • Shared reading and guided reading will also
    occur. Read aloud is done by the teacher (single
    reader) and should include think alouds,
    comprehension questions, etc.Shared reading is
    when the whole group reads the text together. It
    is used to improve fluency and expression. Also
    discuss text features, comprehension questions,
    and other reading strategies.
  • Sight words are continued to be addressed in
    Grade 1. I will send home a sight word list
    Friday in your childs folder.
  • Grammar includes verbs, nouns, adjectives,
    contractions, compound sentences, etc.

First Grade Curriculum- Cobb
  • Language Arts short/long vowels, syllables,
    word blending/chunking, word families, decoding,
    spelling patterns, fluency, expression, voice,
    vocabulary, reading and comprehending a variety
    of texts and genres, verbs, nouns, pronouns,
    possessive pronouns, homonyms, adjectives, etc.
  • Handwriting- Zaner- Bloser, see sample letter
    formation in packet
  • Writing Lucy Calkins writers workshop, writing
    process, narrative writing, informational
    writing, author study
  • Math and - facts to 20, making ten, place
    value, data and graphing, representing and
    comparing numbers to 120, geometric figures,
    fractions, time, measurement, double digit
    addition and subtraction without regrouping- YOU
    WILL BE GETTING A 9 WEEK OVERVIEW FROM ME
  • Science types of weather, seasonal changes,
    weather data and instruments, changes in water,
    forms of precipitation, water cycle, magnets,
    sound/pitch/volume, sources of light and shadows,
    basic needs of plants and animals, parts of a
    plant, animal classifications
  • Social Studies continents, oceans, landforms,
    maps and globes, cardinal and intermediate
    directions, location of city/state/country,
    American historical figures, goods and services,
    producers and consumers, personal spending and
    saving

Grading
  • 4 ½ week progress reports only go out if there is
    a need
  • 9 week report cards
  • 3,2,1 standards based report card
  • Successful, Progressing or Needs more time will
    be for behavior and P.E., Health, Music and Art
  • Check out your childs Friday folder work for
    insight into how they are doing academically

Folders and Homework
  • 2 folders each Friday will be coming home
  • Red Media Folder with Murdock information
  • Your childs weekly folder- manila folder,
    decorated
  • In this folder you will see all your childs
    class work for the week and their homework for
    the following week
  • Review ALL work with your child and send the
    folder back in Thursday with homework completed.
  • Homework will be optional, and it will not be
    worksheets. There are plenty of printable sheets
    online for you to access and if you wish to have
    your child complete these I will gladly look them
    over. However, the monthly extension calendars
    are a lot of fun. Projects will be given each
    nine week period as well which will be mandatory.
  • READING IS A NIGHTLY ASSIGNMENT!!!

Safety
  • Sign in at front office even if you are coming in
    for 5 minutes
  • Sit at guest table when eating lunch with your
    child, other children are not allowed. You must
    send a note with your child if someone other than
    the custodial parent(s) are coming to eat with
    your child
  • Contact me if there is a specific safety issue
    with your child I should know about
  • Send notes regarding afternoon schedule changes
    before 145 pm
  • Please let me know if any information changes on
    your permanent record such as address or phone
    number
  • Snacks- PLEASE make sure and pack a healthy snack
    and nut free
  • Parents will be invited in at least 6 times a
    year to facilitate a craft, art project or
    holiday station. Two classroom parties will be
    held- winter and end of year.
  • I need to have a written note if your child is
    not allowed to be photographed at Murdock. These
    pictures could be used for our website as well as
    BLOG usage.

Behavior Plan
  • Students will have the opportunity for positive
    reinforcement on a daily basis.
  • Students will be earning tickets to access
    rewards
  • We will implement a daily behavior chart if
    necessary
  • Each Friday, you need to look at the back of your
    childs manila folder and address any concerns
    with your child at that time.
  • A treasure box is used in class. Please send in
    items to fill the box whenever you pick up
    something you think might work

Emergency Information
  • Allergies, Please verbally and in written form
    let me know of any allergies your child may have
  • Medication must be bought to school by the
    parents and kept in the clinic along with a
    signed consent form from Jeannie
  • Fevers free for a minimum of 24 hours prior to
    returning to school

Tardiness and Absences
  • Excused absence- doctor, dentist, religious and
    MUST have a written note
  • Try to schedule doctors appointments after
    school hours.
  • Refer to Cobb calendar for dates to schedule
    appt.- this was in your Cobb Co. folder at Meet
    and Greet

Enrichment Clubs new this year dismissal
  • We now have staggered start times to be able to
    offer more clubs and maintain safety for
    dismissal of students
  • 230 clubs will be dismissed from your classrooms
    to the club meeting room during dismissal
  • All other start times require students to go home
    or attend ASP.
