3What is Parkinsons.
- Parkinsons is a progressive fluctuating
neurological condition non-terminal - Parkinsons occurs when 80 of dopamine producing
cells are lost from the part of the brain that
controls movement - The cause of loss of dopamine is unknown..

- 1 in 500 of general population / 127,000 cases in
UK - (28 increase expected by 2020 162,000 cases)
- Average age of diagnosis 55 - 74 years
- Parkinsons is rarely inherited (5 of cases)

are under 40

- If Parkinsons is suspected, patients should
quickly be referred (untreated) to a neurologist
or to a geriatrician with a special interest in
Parkinsons - Follow up every 6 -12 months to optimise
treatment and reassess the diagnosis
