The fix is to trim down the soft-key blocker so
stike cannot get wedged between it and the bolt.
If separation is OK, strike hits curved part of
bolt and forces it to retract clear strike.
If separation is too small, strike hits flat part
of bolt and it will not retract.
When gate is closed, electric strike cam prevents
rotation.
When gate is unlocked, cam allows strike to
rotate. However, if strike has gotten wedged
between soft-key blocker and bolt, strike cant
rotate.

Softkey blocker length trimmed back
The D shaped soft-key blocker is supposed to be
pushed in when the door is closed When it is
pushed in, the main bolt cannot be pushed in by
sliding a credit card into the gap in the door
jam. When mated with a wedge shaped electric
strike, the door often closes past the point
where the soft-key blocker is depressed, as shown
in second sketch from left on bolt diagram, hence
defeating its purpose. More important, the edge
of the electric strike often gets jammed between
the soft-key blocker and the main bolt,
preventing the electric strike from rotataing.
In the photo, the D shaped soft-key blocker
or soft-keying inhibitor has been cut back so the
edge of the rotating electric strike cant get
wedged between it and the main bolt. All works
well when the bolts are new, but as thiing wear,
the fit gets sloppy and the distance between the
soft-key blocker and the main bolt increases.

Electric Strike Shim
As the moisture content of the soil changes from
summer to winter and back again to summer and
back to winter, the soil expands, then
contracts, then expands. As it does so, the gate
moves laterally, sometimes as much as half an
inch. When the swing gate moves towards the
fixed post, the electric strike must be moved
into the post to assured that contact, on
closing, is made on the curved portion of the
bolt. ( see right hand most sketch). When the
gate moves away from the post, the shim may have
to be removed, so the electric strike catches the
bolt. An additional brace is being added across
the top of the front gate at Jasmine to inhibit
changes in gate to post spacing, but even with
the brace, the spacing is likely to change over
time.
A 1/8th inch thick piece of aluminum (yellow
arrow) has been inserted between the mounting
plate and the case of the electric strike,
pushing the strike deeper into the door frame.
The strike can be pushed out away from the post
by moving the shim from the shown location to
that indicated by the purple box. Removing the
shim moves the strike closer to the mounting
plate. Inserting the shim behind the mounting
plate, moves the mounting plate away from the
post. Lock-tite should be used on the mounting
plate screws so they do not come loose. Lock tite
should used very sparingly, if used at all, on
the screws that hold the body of the electric
strike to the mounting plate to prevent it from
getting into the pivot points. Similarly, care
should be taken to keep paint away from the
mechanism. The Jasmine front gate electric
strike is a 24 V dc silent strike. It is a
special order item that costs nearly 100. Treat
it with care.
See next page for Metric Thread Notes.

Mounting Screws
METRIC - The body of the electric strike is
fastened to the mounting plate with two, 6 x 1
metric machine screws. The mounting plate is
fasten to the gate post with stainless steel
screws having an English thread, I believe 8 -
32.
