  • Most Americans were split in who to support
    during the Revolutionary war based on location
    and religion
  • The War also divided many Native American tribes
    forcing them to choose who they thought would
    treat them the best
  • African Slaves also were divided among who to
    fight for, Fighting for freedom (B) and for
    equality (C)
  • The War Would also split families (like Ben
    Franklin and his son)

Will Fight for Food
  • George Washington was put in charge of training
    his New Continental Army
  • Due to the rules of Enlisting in the
    Revolutionary Army Washington never had an Army
    of more than 17,000 Troops who were also under
    supplied for war
  • Women tried to help whenever they could in the
    Army, from cooking, to running water, to fighting
    in the war
  • Britain Hoped to defeat the Small Disorganized
    Patriots Quickly in a decisive Battle
  • Washington wanted to win small battles until his
    army was better trained and Better Supplied

  • After Forcing the British to retreat from Boston,
    Washington moved his troops to New York where
    Britain was receiving supplies
  • Britain landed in New York with more troops
    including 9000 German Mercenaries (Hessians) who
    were paid to fight
  • Washington and his troops were forced to retreat
    from New York badly beaten and weak

  • Thomas Paine tried to write propaganda to urge
    support for the American Troops
  • Washington needed to win a quick and important
    battle so he planned a Christmas Attack on the
    Hessians in New Jersey
  • On the Christmas Attacks Washington and his Army
    Killed 900 Hessians and Gained Much needed
    Supplies
  • After the Victory at Princeton Washingtons Army
    Gained confidence, supplies, and more recruits to
    fight

Operation Hudson River
  • Britain developed a strategy to cut New England
    off from the Colonies by controlling the Hudson
    River
  • As General John Burgoyne Made his Way to Albany
    the Patriots were obstructing his route to delay
    his arrival

  • Burgoyne took 4 weeks to travel the last 25 miles
    of his trip and found nobody had reached the
    rendezvous point in Albany
  • General Howe had decided to attack George
    Washington at Philadelphia and would not make it
    to Albany
  • Howe Did not capture Washington after TWO battles
    (Brandywine and Germantown) but controlled
    Philidelphia

  • Colonel Barry St. Leger tried to defeat the
    Americans at Fort Stanwix with the help of Joseph
    Brant and his sister Molly
  • As Brant and Molly tried to gain Iroquois
    support, Benedict Arnold Spread rumors that his
    Army was Larger than it actually was
  • St. Leger and his troops fled and left behind
    supplies for Arnold
  • General Burgoyne would be left to fight alone in
    New York

Once a Hero
  • Looking for Supplies Burgoyne's troops were
    defeated by New England at the Battle of
    Bennington
  • As Burgoyne Pushed Towards New York they
    encountered General Horatio Gates who had
    fortified the route with Earthen walls to Help
    them fight Britain
  • While Gates held off the British, Benedict Arnold
    fought the British at Freemans farm
  • After Several Attacks, Benedict Arnold finally
    Forced Burgoyne to retreat from Freemans Farm

Always a Goat
  • As Burgoyne retreated to Saratoga, the
    Continental Army continued night and Day attacks
    leading to Burgoyne's Surrender
  • After the Battle of Saratoga, Benedict Arnold
    would Sympathize with the loyalists and become a
    traitor to the Patriots
  • The Battle of Saratoga made Great Britain, and
    the rest of Europe, realize that America may win
    its independence
