• VV. 6-7For I am now ready to be offered (newer
  versions say I am already being poured out as a
  drink offering, indicating that his martyrdom had
  already commenced and his death was close at
  hand), and the time of my departure is at hand. I
  have fought a good fight, I have finished my
  course, I have kept the faith

• V. 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown
  of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous
  judge shall give me at that day (we do not go
  directly to our reward in heaven. 1 Peter 54
  says that faithful elders will receive their
  crown of glory when the chief Shepherd shall
  appear) and not to me only, but unto all them
  also that love his appearing.

• VV. 9-10Do thy diligence to come shortly unto
  me For Demas (this man had labored in the gospel
  with PaulColossians 414 Philemon 24) hath
  forsaken me, having loved this present world, and
  is departed unto Thessalonica Crescens to

  man had abandoned Paul and Barnabas during their
  first missionary tripActs 1313 1538), and
  bring him with thee for he is profitable to me
  for the ministry. And Tychicus have I sent to

  Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and
  the books, especially the parchments (possibly
  scrolls of various Old Testament books).
  Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil the
  Lord reward him according to his works Of whom
  be thou ware also for he hath greatly withstood
  our words.

• VV. 16-17At my first answer no man stood with
  me, but all men forsook me (reminiscent of the
  Lords trialJohn 1632) I pray God that it may
  not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the
  Lord stood with me, and strengthened me that by
  me the preaching might be fully known, and that
  all the Gentiles might hear and I was delivered
  out of the mouth of the lion.

  ever. Amen. Salute Prisca and Aquila (this couple
  had been willing to die for PaulRomans 163-4),
  and the household of Onesiphorus (this man was
  not ashamed of Pauls bonds2 Timothy 116).

• VV. 20-22Erastus (this man was the treasurer of
  CorinthRomans 1623) abode at Corinth but
  Trophimus have I left at Miletus sick. Do thy
  diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth
  thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all
  the brethren. The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy
  spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
