Why did we want Hawaii?

Hawaii had a lot to offer
  • We wanted Hawaii for three reasons
  • 1) Great soil to grow sugar cane!
  • 2) Great Harbor for a naval base (Pearl Harbor)
  • 3) Great supply point for trips to and from
    Asia.

7
We took Hawaii

  • Plantations required cheap labor and people began
going to Hawaii to work, including Japanese,
    Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Filipinos, Spanish
    and Puerto Ricans.
  • U.S. Plantation Investors were concerned they
would lose their investments to foreigners.

8

21
Monroe Doctrine
  • Proclamation in 1823 by President James Monroe.
Basically, it warned European nations not to get
involved in political matters in Central and
South America. The Doctrine was intended to show
that the United States was the only country that
could influence such political matters. Further,
several countries in South American had recently
    undergone revolutions against their European
colonial owners and ended up with republican
governments. The United States agreed with their
political philosophy and did not want to see
those newly free nations become European colonies
    again.

22
Roosevelt Corollary
23
Roosevelt Corollary
  • Monroe Doctrine was a 'please don't do anything'
  • Roosevelt said 'You better not do anything! Or
    Else!'
