Welcome to Your Final Seminar!
  • For many of you this will be the last Seminar
that you attend before graduation, I want to

you the best of luck. I truly hope you have

  • To be successful in Unit 8, you should
  • Complete the Short Paper Emerging Technologies
  • Participate in the Discussion
  • Take a Break
  • What should you get from this unit?
  • By the end of unit 8 you should understand the
impact of emerging technologies on the
investigation of crime, as a tool for criminal
enterprise, and on the operations of criminal
    justice agencies.

4
Unit 8 Short Paper
  • With the advent of various technological
advancements, law enforcement efforts in the
investigation and prosecution of crime have been
met with positive results. However, with every
advantage comes a disadvantage, as criminals have
also benefited from these technologies and use
same during the commission of their crimes or as
a tool for their crimes (this is evidenced in
computer related offenses and the misuse of the
    Internet).

5
Unit 8 Short Paper
  • In a three page paper address the following
  • Summarize the advantages of computers and the use
    of computer technology in investigations
  • Summarize the disadvantages to law enforcement
with respect to the advancement of computers
  • Research a case where the computer was used to
aid in the commission of a crime
  • Research a case where the use of the computer was
    beneficial to the prosecution
  • Write a concluding paragraph that addresses your
subjective opinion as to whether these
technologies are a benefit or a hindrance to law
    enforcement.

6
So, Lets Talk About Technology
  • What technology have you decided to discuss in
    your papers?
  • Is the technology good or bad for law
enforcement? What are some of the
    advantages/disadvantages?
  • Is the technology good or bad for the criminals?
Will the technology you have decided to discuss
help a criminal commit crimes, or will it
ultimately lead to their arrest and prosecution?
  • Can you provide some examples of technology that
has changed/advanced in the last 20 years (for
instance typewriters have been replaced by
    computers)?

7
Unit 8 Conclusion
  • Are there any questions regarding this unit?
  • Does anyone have any information, suggestions,
tips, etc that would be beneficial to your
    classmates?

Unit 9 Transnational Crime
  • To be successful in Unit 9 you should
  • Complete the PowerPoint project Transnational
    Crime
  • Participate in the discussion
  • Visit Take a Break
  • What should you get from this unit?
  • By the end of Unit 9 you should recognize and
    evaluate transnational criminal enterprises and
analyze the role of culture in criminal behavior
    and justice systems.

9
Transnational Crime
  • So, what is transnational crime?
  • According to Schmalleger (2007) a simple
definition for the term transnational crime is
the unlawful activity undertaken and supported
by organized criminal groups operating across
    national boundaries (p. 736).
  • What are some examples of these groups that you
    can think of?
  • What are some of the crimes that they are
    committing?

10
Groups Involved in Transnational Crime
  • Some examples of organized criminal enterprise
groups include, but are not limited to
  • Mafia (traditional, Russian, Japanese, etc).
  • Outlaw Biker Gangs
  • Terrorist Organizations
  • Cyber Criminals
  • Narco-Terrorists

11
Examples of Transnational Crimes
  • The following is a short list of crimes that are
    committed across borders
  • Narcotics trafficking
  • Human trafficking, people smuggling
  • Prostitution/Sex slavery
  • Arms trafficking
  • Terrorism
  • Cyber Crimes

12
Unit 9 PowerPoint Project
  • Compare and contrast two separate cultures and
ethnicities that harbor ill-will toward the
United States. In a 12-15 PowerPoint slide
presentation, please compare both of your
selections and be sure to discuss the role that
socialization and religion play in shaping the
beliefs of these cultures. Be prepared to provide
why these beliefs are formed, how culture and
religion shaped these beliefs and why these
cultures are militant in their beliefs toward the
    United States.

13
Unit 9 PowerPoint Project
  • Who, right now, harbors ill-will towards the
United States? Can you provide some examples?
  • Why does this bad blood exist? What are some of
the underlying causes for their hatred of the
    United States?
  • If religion is a factor in your choice, what role
    does it play?
  • It is feasible that many students will focus on
the Middle East for this assignment. Can you
think of any other regions of the world or any
other countries outside the middle east that may
want to cause harm to the United States?

14
Unit 10 Capstone Review
  • This unit will conclude CJ499 Bachelor Capstone
in Criminal Justice. During this week I would
like you to reflect on what you have learned over
the previous nine weeks in the class and over the
previous few years that you have attended class
here at Kaplan. I want you to think about how
everything you have learned has come together in
    this class.
  • By the end of this week I want you to be able to
explain how your work in this course relates to
the Bachelors Program Outcomes and your own
    professional development.

15
Unit 10 Capstone Review
  • To be successful in this unit you should
participate in the reflective discussion. You
will write a brief essay that addresses the
    following questions
  • 1. What prior knowledge did you bring to this
    class?
  • 2. What were the most important new ideas you
encountered and how did they change your
    understanding of criminology?
  • 3. Do you feel you have met the outcomes in your
work on this course? Is there any outcome with
which you feel you still need support or
    assistance?

16
Unit 10 Capstone Review
  • 4. What have you learned from your discussions
and collaborations with your fellow students?
  • 5. In what specific ways can you use the
knowledge youve gained in this course in your
chosen profession? What are your strengths and
opportunities for growth in this area?
  • 6. What questions or concerns do you have about
    what you have studied?
  • 7. What areas of the subject would you like to
    continue to explore, and why?

17
Conclusion
  • To conclude, I want to commend each of you on the
hard work you have put into this course. I have
enjoyed working with all of you. I have had the
opportunity to learn from you and I hope you are
walking away from this course with some new
knowledge that you did not have a few short weeks
    ago.
  • For those of you that will be graduating shortly,
remember no one can ever take this achievement
away from you. You have reached a milestone in
your life and have done something that not
everyone can do. You should be very proud of
    yourselves.

18
Conclusion
  • For those of you that are planning to go on to
graduate school, take what you have learned here
at Kaplan and utilize it to the best of your
abilities. You will, undoubtedly, have a strong
    foundation to build on.
  • For those of you working in the criminal justice
system now, thank you for your service. Please,
stay safe and make sure you make it home to your
family every night. For those of you thinking
about a career in the criminal justice system, I
    wish you all the best.
  • For everyone, take what you have learned in your
studies to make the criminal justice system
better. The system will need educated and
motivated people over the next few years to
ensure that we maintain the best system of
    justice in the world.

19
Conclusion
  • Finally, take a few minutes to thank everyone
that has helped you to get here. Let your family
and friends know how appreciative you have been
of their support. We have to remember that the
sacrifices we make in the pursuit of higher
education are not ours alone. Good luck in
everything you do from this point!
