How They Gathered Food
  • The Hopi were farmers.
  • What they grew corn, pumpkins, squash, beans,
    melons, fruit

Clothing
  • Hopi men didn't wear much clothing-- only
    breechcloths or short kilts (men's skirts).
  • Hopi women wore knee-length cotton dresses called
    mantas. c) A manta fastened at a woman's right
    shoulder, leaving her left shoulder bare.
  • Men and women both wore deerskin moccasins on
    their feet
  • Some clothes were made from wool.

  • Hopis live in pueblos that are made of stone and
    mud and stand several stories high.

  • Women owned the land and house that the family
    lived on.
  • Women cooked, cleaned, took care of the kids, and
    wove baskets.
  • Men harvested food, hunted, performed ceremonies
    and the did the weaving.

  • They made clay pottery.
  • They had carvings and elaborate designs on them.
    Most of their designs told a story.

Other Interesting Information
  • The Hopi has had the same method of making
    baskets for hundreds of years.
  • Hopi weavers made all ceremonial costumes.
  • When a child is born they get a special blanket
    and a perfect ear of corn.  On the 20th day they
    take the child to the mesa cliff and hold it
    facing the rising sun.  When the sun hits the
    baby is given a name.
