General things to keep in mind
  • Dont what if...
  • No change is correct approximately 25 of time.
  • Omit underlined portion is correct 50 of
    time.
  • Guess if you dont know.
  • Answer every question.
  • Dont skip questions to come back to later.

Sentence Fragments
  • Example The bride and groom drove away in their
    car. As the children ran behind, shouting and
    laughing.
  • Example 2 Although it will always be associated
    with Shakespeares famous character. The castle
    at Elsinore was never home to Hamlet.

Look for the following
  • Dependent clauses by themselves. (Watch out for
    starting words when, where, how, why, if, as,
    because, although, while, despite, that, who,
    what.)
  • Punctuation changes in answer choices. (You are
    often asked to incorporate two sentences into
    one. Check the punctuation in answer.)

Run-ons and Comma Splices
  • Example Aunt Sally swept up the shards of glass
    she was furious. (Run-on)
  • Example Aunt Sally ran into the room, Tom was
    already gone. (Comma Splice)

Run-ons and Comma Splices
  • Look for independent clauses joined by comma
    (without conjunction--comma splice).
  • Look for a sentence containing two independent
    clauses.
  • Check the punctuation in the answer choices.
    Answers dividing sentences are a clue to this
    error.

Misplaced Modifiers
  • Example Walking into the pawn shop, Bobs watch
    dropped into the sewer.
  • Why? Bobs watch cannot walk.
  • Look for modifying phrases followed by commas.
    Does the noun being modified occur right after
    the comma? If not, that is the error.

Construction Shifts
  • Example Stepping to avoid the large puddle, I
    carefully tripped and fell.
  • Clue Look for shifting modifiers in answer
    choices.

Parallel Structures
  • For a list of three or more, each item must be
    in the same format.
  • Example When Tom finally came home, Aunt Sally
    kissed him, hugged him, and gives him his
    favorite dinner.
  • Clue Look for a series of nouns or actions.
