Virtual Reality System for Improved Hand-Eye
Coordination.

Background Applications for therapy are an
important application field of virtual reality.
Compared to real therapeutic setups, their
virtual counterparts offer infinite varieties and
can thus be adapted to the patients needs. Since
the virtual reality hardware has become
affordable now, it will boost the aforementioned
application field.
Scope of this work The main focus of this
research is to study how eye-hand coordination
can be improved using virtual exercises, as well
as the dependency on visual output devices such
as screen or head-mounted display (2D and 3D
output capability). To perform this study, it is
essential to develop a virtual reality game.
Using Unity and C, a framework should be
developed that integrates the Leap Motion sensor
for hand tracking and the Oculus Rift as visual
display. With the help of this framework, a wire
loop game should be developed that allows for
studying different complexities in hand-eye
coordination. The game consists of a wire and a
loop, and the users should try to pass the loop
through the wire without touching the loop with
the wire. After a successful implementation of
the setup, a user study should be developed and
performed that will investigate the influence of
depth perception (2D vs. 3D) on the overall
performance of the system. Ideally, the results
should also be compared to a real setup.

Scope of this work Strong programming skills are
required for the integration of the Leap Motion
sensor into the Unity software and for
implementing additional filtering algorithms to
improve stability of the tracking signal.
