welcomed in Asia! - Asians already practiced religions such as
Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Islam, and
Confucianism, - However, the spread of religion came naturally
with spread of trade colonies

tea, spices - Asians wanted clocks, eyeglasses, guns
weapons, scientific instruments (technology)

- Spices were one of the original goods desired by
Europeans in Asia (originally - Silk Road) - Portugal took the Spice Islands from the Muslims
in 1511. - The Netherlands took the Spice Islands from
Portugal in the 1600s. - Muslims Portuguese Dutch
11Why want the Philippines?
- Great place to stop when trading between Americas
and Asia (good harbors) - No spices, but they do have fertile soil for
growing crops - Spanish missionaries converted many Asians here
to the Catholic faith only Asian nation with a
Catholic majority - (Spain ruled these islands until the early 1900s)
12Mainland Asia
- The mainland is the area away from the coasts
Harder to reach! - Strong kingdoms ruled the mainland in countries
like China. - Most European countries did not get into the
Mainland for many years.
