1. Align compass in the desired direction

1. Rotate outer ring until arrows aligned

1. Read the direction from the front.

1. Note this direction is magnetic, not geographic
   (some compasses can adjust for this. Topo maps
   will show you the local difference between
   magnetic and geographic directions)
