• Sahel is based on climate, it does not abide by
  strict international borders
• Transition zone between the northern Sahara
  Desert and the Savannas in the south
• The Arabic word sa?il ???? literally means
  "shore, coast", describing the appearance of the
  vegetation of the Sahel as a coastline delimiting
  the sand of the Sahara.

Vegetation - Sahel

• Semiarid region - rainfall 12 to 20 inches per
  year. 
• Covered in grassland savanna, with areas of
  woodland and shrub land.
• During the long dry season, many trees lose their
  leaves, and the predominantly annual grasses die.
