• Darwin did not know anything about genes or
  mutations
• Could not explain the variations or how they were
  passed on
• Variations result from mutations in genes or from
  the combinations of alleles inherited from the
  parent
• Only traits that are controlled by genes are
  acted upon by natural selection

• Geographical isolation can cause the formation of
  a new species

• Once a group becomes isolated they can no longer
  mate with the rest of the group
