A solar panel is made up of photovoltaic
cells. A photovoltaic cell converts light
energy into electricity. A conductor is
something that electricity can travel through.
Conductors vary in their ability to allow
electricity to flow. Semiconductors are made
from materials such as silicon. Other chemicals
are then added to change the behaviour of the
electricity. A P type Boron N type
Phosphorus The silicon is treated with an
antireflective coating to absorb more
energy. Solar cells are usually quite small so
many cells are combined to make a solar panel.

N-type semiconductor A semiconductor type in which the density of holes in the valence band is exceeded by the density of electrons in the conduction band. N-type behaviour is induced by the addition of donor impurities, such as arsenic or phosphorus, to the crystal structure of silicon. In N-type semiconductors, electrons are the majority carriers, and holes are the minority carriers.
P-type semiconductor A semiconductor type in
which the density of electrons in the conduction

addition of acceptor impurities, such as boron,
to the crystal structure of silicon. In P-type
semiconductors, holes are the majority carriers,
and electrons are the minority carriers.
