A preposition is always part of a group of words
called a prepositional phrase. A prepositional
phrase begins with a preposition and ends with
a noun or pronoun called the object of the
preposition.
3Prepositional Phrases
- Any number of modifiers (adjectives)
- can come between a preposition and
- its object.
- Examples
- 1. Margaret missed the train ( by two
- minutes.)
- The birds flew ( between the old
- wooden beams.)
4Prepositional Phrases
A sentence can have several prepositional
phrases, and the phrases can come anywhere in
the sentence. Examples 1. ( Without a
moments hesitation), the cat leaped ( through
the open window.) 2. ( In view of the memo ) (
from the office ) ( of the principal, )
afternoon classes will be canceled tomorrow.
51. A nurse at a London hospital had a young girl
in her ward. 2. None of the doctors could find a
cure for her. 3. Before work the nurse
began Reading another chapter in a mystery
book. 4. After several pages she put the Book
into her bag and hurried to the hospital.
66. The description of the victims symptoms
matched those of the young girl. 7. The nurse
placed the book in front of the doctors. 8. She
told them about her suspicions. 10. Because of a
mystery by Agatha Christie, a young girls life
was saved.
