Title: Cellular respiration

1
Cellular respiration
  • Stepwise series of reactions that release energy
as they break down complex molecules to carbon
    dioxide and water
  • Some of the energy released is stored in ATP

2
Raw materials for aerobic respiration
carbohydrates,fats, proteins During cellular
respiration the energy stored in glucose is
broken down C6H12O6 6O2 ? 6CO26H2Oenergy
3
Steps of aerobic respiration
  • Glycolysis glucose split into 2 3-carbon
    molecules (Pyruvate)
  • 4 molecules ATP forms
  • 3-carbon molecules breakdown(require O2)

4
2 pyruvate molecules are broken down to acetate
CO2 Carrier molecule Coenzyme A (CoA) picks up
acetate and forms Acetyl-CoAgoes to mitochondria
and the Krebs cycle
5
Acetyl CoA goes through a number of different
steps to ultimately produce 38 molecules of
ATP
6
Summary of glucose breakdown

8
Anaerobic respiration pathway Lactic acid
fermentation After formation of pyruvate , lack
of oxygen forms lactate (3 carbon) Alcoholic
fermentation- acetic acid(yeast) and vinegar
(bacteria ) Produces 2 ATP
