JACKSON'S LEGACY
Two new political parties emerge
  • DEMOCRATS
  • Believed in states rights and federal restrain
    in economic and social affairs.
  • Opposed economic expansion, corporate charters,
    paper money
  • Distrustful of concentrated economic power and of
    moral coersion
  • Tended to lean toward pro-slavery
  • Protected the common man
  • WHIGS
  • Strong national government
  • Favored the BUS, protective tariffs, internal
    improvements, industry, economic expansion,
    corporate charters, paper currency
  • Supported public schools and moral reforms such
    as prohibition of liquor and abolition of slavery
  • Best and privileged run the government

The Presidency ofMartin Van Buren
  • V.P. Martin Van Buren wins in 1836
  • Van Buren did not appeal to the common people
  • He took office just weeks before the American
    credit system collapsed Panic of 1837
  • Blamed on the Democrats
  • Van Ruins Depression
  • Established an independent treasury
  • Treasury branches would accept and pay out only
    gold and silver coin (not accept paper currency
    or checks from state banks)
  • This cost him the next election

  • With the nation in the grip of hard times, the
    Whigs prepared confidently for the election of
    1840
  • Strategy Blame the Democrats for the Depression
  • It worked. Whigs rallied behind William Henry
    Harrison
  • Campaign slogans Log Cabin and Hard Cider
    Tippecanoe and Tyler too Van! Van! Is a
    Used-up Man!
  • It was a peoples crusade against the aristocrats
    in the Palace
  • Harrison wooed supporters with huge rallies,
    parafes, songs, posters, campaign mementos, and a
    party newspaper
  • The Whigs Triumph

William Henry Harrison took office in 1841
  • Repealed the independent treasury
  • At the age of 68, he caught pneumonia and died
    within a month of his inauguration
  • His successor, VP John Tyler, found himself as
    the first vice president to move up to the
    presidency on the death of a president

To the Whigs dismay, Tyler acted more like a
Democrat
  • He often opposed his own partys congressional
    agenda
  • Repeatedly vetoed Henry Clays tariffs and
    blocked attempts to revive the Bank of the United
    States
  • His entire cabinet resigned
  • He became a president without a party and was not
    elected again

TEXAS WAR OF INDEPENDENCE
  • Mexico (now an independent country) allowed
    Americans (aka empresarios) to live in areas
    where present day Texas is located
  • The only requirements were that they become
    Mexican citizens and do not practice slavery on
    their farms

  • Empresarios began moving into Texas in the
    1820s and brought their slaves with them.
  • The empresarios started to rebel against the
    Mexican government because they felt their rights
    had been violated
  • Empresarios won in 1836

  • Texas became its own country with Sam Houston
    president, 1836 to 1845.
  • Mexico never recognized the independence of
    Texas.
  • Texans decide to apply to become part of the
    United States
  • President Jackson and Van Buren refused to
    recognize Texas statehood because of the debates
    surrounding slavery.

In the last days of his administration, President
Tyler proposed the annexation of Texas.
  • In 1843, Britain actively opposed annexation
  • The vote was close and divided along sectional
    lines
  • The annexation vote was passed in 1845
  • Texas was admitted as a slave state

Oregon fever struck thousands in 1841
  • Lured by the glowing reports of missionaries who
    seemed enthusiastic about the Northwests riches
    and beauty, many took the Oregon Trail

  • In 1843, a large group of American expansionists
    demanded the entire Oregon Country for the United
    States, up to its northernmost border at 5440.
  • Soon, Fifty-four Forty or Fight became the
    rallying cry of American expansionists
