Title: Parent and Teacher Communication

1
Parent and Teacher Communication
  • Building Positive Relationships Through
    Communication

2
Why Communication is Important
  • Research shows that children do better in school
when parents talk often with teachers and become
    involved in the school.
  • Studies show that children whose parents are
involved in education are more motivated in
    school.
  • Motivated students are more likely to participate
in class, more likely to complete homework, and
    more likely to achieve academically.
  • In short, motivated children become students
with good chances for bright futures

3
The Role of the School
  • Keep parents informed regularly of what is
    happening in the school.
  • Establishing a regular means of communication
with parents throughout the school year-weekly
    classroom newsletters, teacher-parent journals,
good news phone calls or Friday folders.
  • Making sure parents understand classroom programs
and policies, and the importance of parent
    support.
  • Supporting parent and community volunteers in the
    school.

4
The Role of the Family
  • Develop good two-way communication about your
goals for your child, your childrearing
practices, and family preferences in order to
minimize conflicts and confusion for children.
  • If you are troubled by something that may have
occurred in the classroom, discuss it with your
childs teacher at an appropriate time and
    setting. Open, respectful communication often
clarifies a situation before it becomes a
    problem.
  • If possible, actively participate in your childs
    school.
  • Strengthen the bond between your child and her
teacher by helping to establish an attitude of
    trust.
  • Mention the teachers name in conversation at
home, and show interest in your childs
    interactions with her/him.
  • Let your childs teacher know you appreciate
    his/her efforts.
