1The Middle Atlantic ColoniesChapter 6
- Colonial Philadelphia
- Lesson 2
- p. 218
2Philadelphia
- Since William Penn was in charge of Pennsylvania,
he planned its government and the cities inside
of it. Penn named Pennsylvanias chief city,
Philadelphia, which means city of brotherly
love. This meant that people of many different
backgrounds could get along with each other. Do
we have brotherly love in McKown Town?
3- William Penn planned the layout of Philadelphia
that looked like a checkerboard, with straight
streets laid out in great squaresthat pattern
can still be seen today! - See maps in book p. 219
- Show atlas in classroom of Philadelphia
4- Philadelphia was located near good land and
waterways that contributed to the growth of
shipping and trading. - Philly developed into one of the busiest ports
in the English colonies! Some of its major
exports were wheat, corn, and rye - (Exports are goods produced in Philly that are
shipped out to other colonies or countries who
want to buy them)
5People of Philadelphia
- Many immigrants came to Philly.
- (Remember that immigrants are people who come to
a new country to make it their home) - The immigrants came to Philly for 3 reasons.
6Any ideas? (Think about what youve learned
about WHY people would want to come to America)
7Immigrants came to Philly for 3 reasons
- 1) to find a refuge from war and famine
- (famine is a shortage of food)
- 2) To have religious freedom
- 3) To set up their own shops so they could sell
their goods and services - example bakers, blacksmiths, shoemakers,
carpenters, etc..look on our Colonial
Craftsmen bulletin board!
8- The largest group of immigrants that came to
Philly were the Quakers. But others included
Irish Catholics, German Lutherans, Free Africans,
and Jews. - The Germans made a lasting impact on Philly.
They brought with them many of their customs,
traditions, and ideas such as..
9The Conestoga Wagon
- This wagon was much larger than regular ones (see
below) - When a visitor from England first saw Conestogas,
he called them huge moving houses!
10and the Pennsylvania Rifle
- The Germans developed this long-barrel gun, and
it was the most accurate rifle in the world in
the 1700s. - Accurate weapons were needed for hunting
(Remember, hunting was one of the main ways
colonists got their foodthey couldnt just order
a pizza! ? )
11Ben Franklin
- Ben Franklin was a citizen, scientist, and
inventor of Philly who made some very important
contributions..You wont believe how many great
things he did!!! Here are just SOME of the main
ones.
121) He organized the first trained firefighting
company.
132) He worked to have the streets of Philly paved
and lit at night.
143) He raised money to help build the first
hospital in America.
- What a great guy!!! Oh but wait, theres more..
154) He organized the first militia, which is a
volunteer army to protect Philadelphia.
165) He invented the lightning rod.
- A lightning rod is a straight, thin bar of metal
attached to the top of a house or barn. It
conducts (guides) electricity into the ground.
As a result, the building will not be damaged if
its struck by lightning. Until the invention of
the lightning rod, buildings struck by lightning
usually burst into flames.
176) He established the first library.
187) He was a printer, and started the newspaper,
The Pennsylvania Gazette.
198) He published Poor Richards Almanack
- An almanac is a book that comes out only once a
year - Had a calendar, yearly weather forecast for
planting crops - Had stories, jokes, and witty sayings such as,
Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man
healthy, wealthy, and wise.
20Phyew! Theres only one word to describe Ben
Franklin.
