Ancient Greece
  • The greeks began leaving the peninsula in search
    of better land and trade in the mid-eighth
    century B.C.
  • They built many communities on the Aegean Sea
  • Communities began trading with one another making
    wheat, timber, and iron ore available.

Athens
  • Located on the Greek Peninsula
  • By the end of the 6th century B.C., Athens
    developed a democratic government
  • Only free, adult males whose fathers had been
    citizens of Athens were allowed to participate in
    the government
  • Athens chief rival was Sparta

Sparta
  • Located in the southernmost part of the Greek
    Peninsula
  • Sparta was an oligarchy (a few powerful, wealthy
    individuals rule)
  • Sparta had a powerful army

The Arts
  • In order to honor their gods and goddesses, the
    ancient Greeks created myths and wrote poems and
    plays.
  • Socrates was a great philosopher who studied and
    wrote about friendship, knowledge, and justice.
  • Plato was a student of Socrates and taught about
    human behavior, government, math, and astronomy.

Ancient Roman Republic
  • In 509 B.C. Rome became a republic and was
    governed by elected officials.
  • The Senate was a group of elected officials and
    each year elected 2 leaders called consuls to
    head the government and military.
  • In the beginning mostly Patricians were elected
    to the senate.
  • Plebeians had the right to vote, but couldnt
    hold public office until 287 B.C.

The Roman Empire
  • Julius Caesar was a Roman general and he began
    conquering many territories.
  • In 45 B.C. Caesar fought a fierce battle for
    control of the Roman Republic and became dictator
    of Rome.
  • Caesar was murdered by a group of senators and
    civil war broke out.
  • In 27 B.C. Augustus became emperor of Rome and
    ruled for more than 40 years and Rome prospered.
