Peer Self-Assessment
2
Two Sources of Feedback
  • Self-assessment
  • Metacognition
  • Self-regulation
  • Teacher
  • Peers

3
Critical Questions for Students
  • Where am I going?
  • Where am I now?
  • Where to next?
  • How do I get there?

4
  • In peer- and self-assessment, students take
more responsibility for their learning, become
more self-directed, and engage in collaborative
    processes.
  • (Heritage, 2010)

5
Benefits
  • Research shows that the people providing the
feedback benefit just as much as the recipient,
because they are forced to internalize the
learning intentions and success criteria in the
context of someone elses work, which is less
    emotionally charged than ones own
  • (Wiliam, 2006, p. 6)

6
Sentence Starters
  • It was really clear when you said
  • I didnt understand the part about
  • I wasnt sure why..
  • You made me think about
  • Could you explain more about

7
Feedback and Success Criteria
  •
  • Introduce your topic in a way that engages your
    audience
  • Make an impact on your audience with your ending
  • Peer feedback
  • Starting your speech with a question was a good
way of getting your audience's attention. I think
you could make a bigger impact at the end of your
speech if you go back to your question and finish
with a sentence that shows how you answered the
    question.

8
Metacognition
  • Metacognition is crucial to effective thinking
    and competent performance
  • (NRC, 2001, p. 78)

9
Teacher Role
  • The role of the teacher in modeling the
metacognitive process is central in asking
questions that encourage children to consider
how, for example, they solve problems why they
accept or reject particular ideas or why,
perhaps, they would undertake the process
    differently another time
  • (Jones, 2007, p. 572)

Questions for Team Discussion
  • How do the ideas presented here fit with what we
    know about descriptive feedback?
  • How are the examples shared in this webinar
different from students simply checking their own
    and each others work?
  • What sort of classroom climate/culture would need
to be in place for this sort of peer and
    self-assessment to occur effectively?
  • Describe one way you can use ideas from the
    webinar with your own students.
