1) Anorexia Nervosa

• Characterized by
• Emaciation
• Constant pursuit of thinness
• Unwilling to maintain a healthy weight
• Distortion of body image (Body Dysmorphic
  Disorder)
• Intense fear of gaining weight
• Lack of menstruation (period)
• Extremely disturbed eating behavior

How do Anorexics lose weight?

• Some people with anorexia lose weight by
• Extreme dieting
• Excessive exercise
• Self-induced vomiting
• Laxatives
• Diuretics
• Enemas

Other symptoms may develop over time

• thinning of the bones (osteoporosis)
• brittle hair and nails
• dry and yellowish skin
• Slow breathing/pulse
• Muscle weakness loss
• Severe constipation
• Low blood pressure
• Drop in internal body temperature (feel cold)
• Growth of fine hair all over body

TREATING ANOREXIA

• Three components
• restoring the person to a healthy weight
• treating the psychological issues related to the
  eating disorder and
• reducing or eliminating behaviors or thoughts
  that lead to disordered eating, and preventing
  relapse.

2) Bulimia Nervosa

• Bulimia nervosa is characterized by
• Binging
• Recurrent and frequent episodes of eating
  unusually large amounts of food
• Purging
• Compensates for the binge (e.g., vomiting,
  excessive use of laxatives or diuretics), fasting
  and/or excessive exercise.
• Feeling a lack of control over the eating.
• People with bulimia can fall within the normal
  range for their age and weight

Other symptoms include

• Inflamed and sore throat
• swollen glands
• worn tooth enamel, sensitive and decaying teeth
• Acid reflux
• intestinal irritation from laxative abuse
• kidney problems
• severe dehydration

TREATMENT FOR BULIMIA

• Involves a combination of options and depends on
  the needs of the individual.
• To reduce or eliminate binge and purge behavior,
  a patient may undergo nutritional counseling and
  psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioral
  therapy (CBT), or be prescribed medication.

3) Binge Eating Disorder

• Similar to Bulimia but there is no purging
• Deeply embarrassed about gorging and vow to stop.
  But can't resist the urges and continue binge
  eating.

Symptoms of Binge Eating

• Eat large amounts of food
• Eat even when you're full
• Eating rapidly during binges
• Feel out of control
• Hide food
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Frequent dieting, possibly without weight loss
• Often eat alone
• Feeling disgusted about your eating

Treatment for Binge Eating

• Seek help from medical and mental health
  professionals
• Patient may undergo nutritional counseling and
  psychotherapy

4) Bigorexia (Muscle Dysmorphia)

• Complete preoccupation with muscle
  developmentNever big enough mentality
• They will miss important events
• Continue training through pain or broken bones
• Even lose their job rather than interrupt their
  physical development schedule

What classifieds Bigorexia?

• Up to 5 hours a day thinking about their bodies
• Check themselves up to 12 times a day in the
  mirror
• Common use of anabolic steroids
• Low self esteem, dont want to show off their
  bodies (unlike body builders)

TREATMENT FOR BIGOREXIA

• Difficult because these men rarely feel they have
  a problem
• Combination of educational and psychotherapeutic
  techniques
• Changing patterns of thinking towards more
  realistic and achievable goals
