17- Like the United States, Canada has a free
market economy with limited government
involvment. Canadas government, however,
plays a more direct role in providing services.
19
18- Unlike the United States, Canadas national
and provincial governments provide health care
for citizens.
20
19- Overfishing has weakened the fishing
industries in the Atlantic provinces of
Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince
Edward Island and New Brunswick. Today, most
people in this region hold jobs in
manufacturing, mining and tourism.
21
20- The Central and Eastern Region includes the
large provinces of Quebec and Ontario. The paper
industry is important in Quebec, as is the
creation of hydroelectric power. Montreal is a
major port and leading financial and industrial
center. Ontario has the largest population and
greatest wealth of Canadas provinces. It is a
major agricultural, manufacturing, forestry and
mining center.
22
21- In the West, farming and ranching are major
economic activities in the provinces of Manitoba,
Saskatchewan, and Alberta. This area produces
large amounts of wheat for export and contains
some of the worlds largest reserves of oil and
natural gas. The forests of British Columbia
make Canada the worlds largest producers of
newsprint.
23
22- The North region of Canada includes the
territories of Yukon Territory, Northwest
Territories and Nunavut. The main resources
in this region are minerals such as gold and
