Title: Re-Configurable Computing in Wireless

1
Re-Configurable Computing inWireless
  • BY Sankalp Kallakuri
  • Vaishali Damle

2
Agenda
  • Wireless Processing Demands
  • Chameleon Reconfigurable Processor
  • DSP Nested Loop
  • Reconfigurable Interconnect
  • Comparison

3
Motivation for Reconfigurability in Wireless
  • Constantly varying protocols and standards
  • Dynamic traffic and weather scenario
  • Perfomance gap between the needs of 3G devices
and present day signal processing solutions.

4
Chameleon Architecture
  • Reconfigurable Processing Fabric
  • Processing Elements
  • Local Store Memory
  • Control Logic Unit
  • Programmable I/O
  • Embedded Microprocessor

5
Reconfigurable Processing Fabric
6
RCP design
  • Data Flow- programable I/O usage
  • Paralellism
  • 1) task level
  • 2) Instruction Level
  • Control
  • Architecture Mapping
  • 1)pipelining
  • 2)reconfiguration

7
Parallelising DSP nested Loops
  • Pipelinig no good if Dependancy exists between
    nested loops
  • Outer loop will have to execute sequentially
  • once the inner loop finishes.
  • Example
  • for i1 to 100 do
  • for j1 to 80 do
  • Sum 0
  • for k1 to 10 do
  • sum sum ai,k yi,j-k-1
  • end for
  • yI,jaI,0 xI,j sum
  • end for
  • end for

8
Pipelined stage
9
Time taken
  • T_piped(NjNk)Ni
  • T_1(NjNk)Ni
  • T_egT_bodyNiNjNk

11
Reconfigurability using programmable interconnect
12
Low power interconnect ckt
13
Comparison of architectures
  • ASIC gives best performance but cant keep up
    with time - market needs
  • FPGA gives the same performance as the RCP but
    it may cost more.
  • DSP slower and less flexible than RCP
  • RCP fsater than DSP by abt 6 times on TI
    benchmarks

14
Conclusion
  • RCPs provide a good solution in terms of speed
and flexibilty and provide a wide range of
resources to the designer while trying to
    implement 3G wireless applications.
