Title: Matter Tree

1
Matter Tree
  • Matter anything that has mass and takes up
    space
  • Pure substance only 1 kind of matter
  • Elements all the same atoms (smallest part of
    an element)
  • Compounds two or more elements chemically
    combined (smallest part is molecule)

2
Element or compound?
Elements chlorine, iron, gold
Compounds salt, copper chloride, sugar
3
Matter Tree
  • Mixture two or more substances which keep their
    same properties (not chemically combined)
  • Heterogeneous particles not uniform through
    out, can see different parts
  • Suspension mixture contains large particles,
which settle out (e.g. salad dressing)
  • Homogeneous particles uniform throughout, can
    not see different parts
  • Solution one substance dissolved in another
  • Alloy mixture of two or more metals

4
Heterogeneous or Homogeneous?
heterogeneous
homogeneous
5
Suspension, solution or alloy?
6
Properties
  • Physical observed without changing the
    substance
  • e.g. color, shape, density, mass, volume,
    melting point, boiling point, solubility
    (dissolves)
  • Chemical describes how a substance reacts
  • e.g. flammable, reactivity (chemically
    combines with something)
  • changes the substance into something new

7
Properties
  • Some properties depend on how much of the
    substance is there
  • Mass, volume, shape
  • Many properties do not depend on the amount
    present. These are called characteristic
    properties.
  • density, state of matter, melting point, boiling
    point, reactivity, solubility

8
Changes of Matter
  • Physical substance stays the same, (you can get
    original back using normal means)
  • e.g. change shape/size, change of state,
    dissolving, mixing
  • Chemical substance changes and new one(s) form
(cant get back using normal means)
  • Clues change in color or smell, temperature,
    fizzing, makes noise, light
