Basic Terminology Review
  • kin/kinsman family member relative
  • foreshadow a hint or clue in the text that
    indicates what will happen later in the story
  • pun a humorous word or phrase used to suggest
    multiple meanings (a play on words)

Ultimatum
  • A final demand, one whose rejection will end with
    a consequence
  • In the Princes speech after the brawl where his
    citizens showed their pernicious behavior, he
    gave the two families an ultimatum. What was his
    ultimatum? Provide the quote and the analysis.

Oxymoron
  • A contradiction in words or a statement.
  • Review Romeos speech after he notices the fight
    that occurred earlier between his family and the
    Capulets. He makes a series of oxymorons. List
    these examples he provides and what he may mean
    through his listing of oxymoronswhy the use of
    oxymorons.

Dramatic Dialogue Cues
  • Soliloquy a lengthy speech that reveals the

  • Monologue a lengthy speech given by a character,
    usually to the audience or other characters in
    the play

Foil
  • foil a character who serves as a contrast to
    emphasize opposing traits in another character
  • Analyze the types of foils we see in the play

  • Paradox a situation/statement which seems
    contradictory, but nevertheless is true
  • Ex The doctor needs to have surgery.
  • Irony the opposite of what you expect (in
    meaning or situation) unexpected
  • Ex George spouts hatred for all women. Then he
    falls in love with a woman.

Dramatic Irony
  • The contrast between what a character knows and
    what the reader/audience knows
  • Explain the current dramatic irony in the play

Subtext
  • Thoughts we imagine the character to have while
    they speak, which may be different from what
    another character expects
  • (What they may really be thinking!)
