Navajo
  • Live in the SW (Arizona)
  • Learned how to adapt to the desert by hunting and
    farming
  • Weaving and sand painting were among their skills
  • Respect for nature
  • Built their homes facing East to show respect to
    the sunrise.

Yurok
  • Live in the NW (California) Redwood Forest
  • Special strings of shells were used for money
  • Bartered for animal skins, food, elk horns, and
    canoes
  • Lived near rivers and fished for salmon, which is
    still important today
  • Changed their environment
  • by building dams

  • Lived in the SE (Georgia) in the Appalachian
    Mtns.
  • They lived hunted, fished, and farmed near rivers
    and streams

  • They traveled west on the Trail of Tears

Haudenosaunee
  • Lived in the NE (New York) in the forests where
    they hunted and grew crops
  • Haudenosaunee means people of the longhouse
  • Six to ten families that lived in the longhouses
    were called a clan
  • Peacemaker helped form a government that made
    laws
  • Five Nations were formed by the government to
    keep order and peace
  • The 5 Nations on the wampum belt were Seneca,
    Oneida, Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga
